Klaviyo vs Mailchimp (2026): which is better for ecommerce?
Affiliate disclosure: We compare products independently. If you buy through an affiliate link, we may earn a commission; that does not change our verdict or the prices we report. Klaviyo does not have a public, conventional affiliate program, and we still rank it first where it is the better product fit.
Our verdict
Klaviyo is the better choice for a product-selling ecommerce brand that will use purchase, catalog and behavioral data in automated email and mobile journeys. Mailchimp is the better choice for a general small business that wants simpler newsletter campaigns, a lower entry price and optional SMS without building its marketing around store events.
For 1,000 marketable profiles, Klaviyo's email plan is $30/month with 10,000 monthly email sends. At the same 1,000-contact benchmark, Mailchimp Essentials is $26.50/month with a 10× contact-tier send allowance; Mailchimp Standard is $45/month with a 12× allowance. The strongest reason not to choose Klaviyo is cost and specialization: if revenue attribution, product feeds and event-triggered ecommerce flows will sit unused, Mailchimp's broader campaign toolkit is the more rational purchase.
| Decision point | Klaviyo | Mailchimp |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Ecommerce brands using order, product and browsing data | General-purpose email campaigns and simpler small-business marketing |
| Free plan | 250 active profiles; 500 emails/month; $5 of mobile messages/month | 250 contacts; 500 emails/month or 250/day; no Marketing Automation Flows |
| 1,000-contact email price | $30/month; 10,000 emails/month | Essentials $26.50/month; Standard $45/month |
| Paid sending model | Normally 10× the maximum active-profile tier | Essentials 10×, Standard 12× and Premium 15× the contact tier |
| SMS/mobile add-on | Prepaid dollar-based Mobile Messaging plan; per-message rate varies by channel, country and number type | SMS credit subscription from $20/month on a paid plan; unused monthly credits expire |
| Transactional email | Included in paid accounts through approved metric-triggered flow messages | Separate add-on for Standard or Premium; from $20 per 25,000-email block |
| Ecommerce data path | Customer profiles, catalog data, product recommendations and event-triggered flows are core to the platform | Ecommerce integrations and order automations are available, but the platform also serves non-commerce use cases |
| Official pricing source | Klaviyo pricing | Mailchimp Marketing pricing |
All prices are USD monthly list prices from official vendor pages, as of August 25, 2026. Taxes, regional pricing, temporary trials, annual discounts and add-ons can change the checkout total. Klaviyo bills by active profiles; Mailchimp counts subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts unless they are archived, cleaned or deleted.
How we compared Klaviyo and Mailchimp
We compared official US-dollar pricing, billing documentation, plan limits, mobile-message rules, ecommerce capabilities and transactional-email requirements. We normalized the headline comparison at 1,000 marketable contacts and treated the vendors' current contact definitions separately rather than pretending that an active Klaviyo profile and a billable Mailchimp contact are identical. The verdict was fixed on product fit before affiliate terms were considered. We did not run a controlled inbox-placement test or a timed usability study, so this page makes no universal deliverability claim and treats “simpler” as an editorial inference from plan scope and workflow limits.

The contact definitions can change the real comparison. Klaviyo prices email by profiles that are eligible to receive marketing email; suppressed profiles retain their event history but do not count toward the active-profile tier. Mailchimp counts subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts across audiences; archived, cleaned and deleted contacts do not count. A store migrating the same database should calculate both vendors from actual billable status, not the raw row count.
Why is Klaviyo better for an ecommerce store?
Klaviyo's paid email product is organized around persistent customer profiles, events, product data, segmentation and flows. Its pricing page includes customer profiles with all-time data, 350+ integrations, built-in reporting and multi-channel segmentation; the platform also supports product recommendations and event-triggered messages. This makes a sequence such as viewed product → started checkout → placed order → repeat-purchase segment a native operating model rather than a collection of disconnected campaigns. Mailchimp supports connected-store automations, order notifications and abandoned-cart messages, so “general-purpose” does not mean “no ecommerce.” The difference is the center of gravity: Mailchimp packages email, templates, forms, reporting, integrations and optional SMS for a wider range of organizations. Choose it when the team mostly schedules campaigns and only needs a few store-triggered messages. Sources: Mailchimp Marketing plans and Mailchimp transactional overview.
Klaviyo's lead is falsified for a specific store if a test account cannot ingest the required product, consent and order events from that store's actual commerce stack, or if those events do not change a live segment or flow. Verify the full data path before migration; an integration-directory listing alone is not proof that every required field syncs.
How do SMS costs compare?
Klaviyo changed its mobile pricing on July 13, 2026. Mobile Messaging now uses prepaid dollar-denominated plans and a per-message dollar rate rather than credits. The rate varies by SMS, MMS, WhatsApp or RCS, recipient country, message segments and—where relevant—US or Canadian number type. Carrier fees are included. The Free plan includes $5 of mobile messages each month; exact paid rates are shown in Account Usage, so this page does not invent one universal SMS price. Sources: Klaviyo's July 2026 mobile-pricing update, mobile-rate calculation, and billing details.
Mailchimp SMS is an add-on to Essentials, Standard or Premium and starts at $20/month. Credits renew monthly and do not roll over. A US SMS to one recipient normally consumes one credit; a long message split into two messages consumes two, while an MMS to one US or Canadian recipient consumes three. Standard vetting is included with 5,000+ credits on Essentials or Standard. Mailchimp also lists US short codes at $650/month and vanity short codes at $1,150/month, in addition to SMS credit fees. Compare a real monthly message mix at checkout. A headline “from” price is not enough when country, number type, message length and MMS usage change the unit cost.
Which platform handles transactional email better?
Klaviyo lets paid accounts apply for transactional status on individual emails in metric-triggered flows, including order or custom-event flows. Approval can take up to one business day. Transactional messages may reach suppressed profiles except addresses suppressed for hard bounces, seven consecutive soft bounces, suspicious status or spam complaints; editing an approved message removes its transactional status and requires resubmission. Source: Klaviyo transactional-flow requirements.
Mailchimp Marketing can send some order notifications and abandoned-cart messages through automations. Its developer-oriented Mailchimp Transactional API is a separate add-on available to Standard and Premium monthly Marketing accounts. Pricing begins at $20 per block of 25,000 emails for 1–20 blocks; an optional dedicated IP is $29.95/month. Sources: Mailchimp Transactional pricing and transactional plan requirements.
Klaviyo is the cleaner fit when approved purchase-triggered messages should share the same event and profile model as marketing flows. Mailchimp Transactional is the clearer developer API product when the team explicitly wants a separate block-priced delivery service and accepts the required Marketing plan.
Does affiliate availability change the recommendation?
No. Klaviyo's public terms describe an agency/referral partner program rather than an open link-affiliate program, with fee details in a non-public guide. Mailchimp & Co commissions are also not a conventional affiliate option for a new content site: eligibility requires actively managing at least two paid client accounts. Sources: Klaviyo Partner Terms and Mailchimp & Co commission requirements.
There is no promo-code block because neither program provides this page with a verified public code, exact customer benefit and expiry. A fabricated placeholder would make the page look monetizable while failing the offer-proof requirement.
Who should choose Klaviyo?
Choose Klaviyo when online-store events, catalog attributes, product recommendations, revenue attribution and post-purchase flows will determine what each customer receives. Budget from the active-profile tier, then add a real mobile-message scenario rather than assuming SMS is included in the email price.
Who should choose Mailchimp?
Choose Mailchimp when the business needs newsletters, forms, templates, a broad integration directory and occasional automations more than an ecommerce-centered customer-data model. Essentials is the lower-cost 1,000-contact option, but its four-step flow ceiling is material; Standard is the relevant comparison when automations and custom reporting matter.
FAQ
Is Klaviyo better than Mailchimp for Shopify stores?
Usually, if Shopify order, catalog and behavioral events will drive segmentation and flows. The verdict changes if the store mainly sends newsletters or if a test integration cannot sync the specific consent and product fields the team needs.
Is Klaviyo more expensive than Mailchimp at 1,000 contacts?
Klaviyo Email is $30/month for up to 1,000 active profiles. Mailchimp Essentials is $26.50/month at the 1,000-contact benchmark, while Mailchimp Standard is $45/month. Their billable-contact definitions differ, so compare the migrated database in both systems.
How many emails can Klaviyo send per month?
Paid Klaviyo email plans normally allow ten times the maximum active-profile tier. A 1,000-profile plan includes 10,000 monthly emails; a 5,000-profile plan includes 50,000. Klaviyo Free includes 500 sends, not ten times 250.
Does Klaviyo include transactional email?
Paid Klaviyo accounts can submit individual metric-triggered flow emails for transactional approval. Approval may take one business day, and editing an approved message removes the status until it is reviewed again.
Does either platform have a verified promo code here?
No. This page has no vendor-issued code with documented public-display permission, customer benefit and expiry, so it does not publish a placeholder or claim a discount.
